Out-the-Door Price: The Only Number Worth Negotiating

At the dealership the conversation almost always starts with the payment: "What monthly payment are you looking for?" It's the worst question for a buyer, and you don't have to answer it.

What the out-the-door price is

The out-the-door (OTD) price is everything you'll pay: the car, all fees, taxes, tag and registration. The bottom line. That's the number to negotiate, for three reasons.

  • It can't be shuffled. A discount on the car can be clawed back through fees. Not on the total.
  • It's comparable. Three dealers' offers line up only on this number — everything else is a different set of lines.
  • It doesn't depend on how you pay. Price is one conversation, financing is another.

Why payment talk is negotiating blind

A payment has four levers: price, term, rate and down payment. Agree to talk payments and you hand all four to the other side. Any payment can be made to look like anything — stretch the term, raise the rate, ask for money down. The question is always what it costs you.

Three conversations, in order

Out-the-door price → trade-in → financing. Three separate conversations, in that order. Until the price is agreed, you hold the strongest lever — walking away. Once you're on the trade-in, you're in the deal. Once you're on financing, you're almost driving off.

The email to send

Send the same text to several dealers — it's the only way to put the answers side by side:

Could you send me a full out-the-door price for VIN [number], broken down line by line? Please include the selling price, any dealer-installed accessories, dealer fee, state and county sales tax, tag, title and registration — with nothing grouped under "other fees." I'd like it by email, so I can compare it with other quotes.

It asks for an answer in writing, line by line, and tells them you're comparing. That changes the tone of the reply.
