Buying a Car in the US With No SSN or Credit History

You can get a car in the US without a credit history. But it's a different deal with different terms, and it shouldn't start with a "$200 a month" ad.

Three different situations

  • SSN, but no history. The simplest case: there's nothing to calculate a score from yet.
  • ITIN. Some lenders work with it, some don't — that's each bank's policy, not the law.
  • Neither SSN nor ITIN. Harder, but not hopeless: there are programs for foreign nationals that look at your visa, income and down payment.

What lenders look at instead

With no score to go on, the lender looks at you and at the collateral: the down payment (the main factor), verifiable income, stability — how long you've been in the country, at your job, at your address — visa term, and a co-signer with history.

In our practice, what's realistically available is most often a lease through the manufacturer's lender on mainstream brands — Toyota, Honda, Acura, Hyundai, for example — with around 30% down. Premium brands rarely work with first-time buyers: mainstream and history first, premium later. That's the price of missing data, not a markup — and it's temporary.

Why a lease is often easier

On a lease, the car belongs to the leasing company from day one, so the lender's risk is lower. Manufacturers' lenders also run dedicated first-time-buyer and foreign-national programs. So consider a lease seriously, even if you planned on a loan.

The classic mistake

Someone sees a car for $200 a month and drives to the dealer. The fine print says a large down payment and "for well-qualified customers." The dealer sends the application to five or seven lenders at once, the declines roll in, and each next lender sees all those inquiries on a nearly empty report.

The right order: documents first, then the lender and the down payment, and only then one targeted application.

Please don't submit my application to multiple lenders. I want to apply only to the manufacturer's finance company first-time buyer program.
